Good jobs are essential in order to combat poverty and inequality, and they are also an important lever for socio-environmental transformation. They contribute to improved resilience in times of crisis and promote social cohesion and equality. Good jobs empower people – particularly women, young people and disadvantaged population groups.

Nine out of ten jobs in Africa are created by companies. This is where we come in: our goal is to create good jobs in eight partner countries in Africa together with companies. The focus is on fair wages, good working conditions and social protection.

We support companies operating in Africa in formalising employment relationships and improve workers’ access to corporate social benefits like additional paid sick days, occupational accident insurance and company pension schemes. Furthermore, we contribute to the objectives of the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions of the United Nations and the World Bank.

Good jobs in the automotive industry – with social protection

In Egypt, too, there is a developing market for electric cars. The government is working to attract manufacturers to the country and promoting the development of a charging infrastructure. The first electric cars assembled in Egypt should be on the roads very soon. The industry needs to respond by training maintenance staff for the new drive technology. Supported by a grant from Invest for Jobs, the Ghabbour Foundation for Development is building its own high-tech training workshops, in which car mechanics will receive training in the maintenance of electric cars and in eco-friendly painting methods.

Companies in the Ghabbour Auto Group have committed to hiring 100 graduates under attractive conditions. They include health insurance and pension benefits that are subsidised by the employer and significantly exceed the statutory minimum. The new painting methods are designed to minimise health risks and thus improve working conditions. In addition, around 375 people are expected to find good jobs with other companies in the automotive industry following their training.
