Boosting young people’s skills in the automotive sector

for Morocco’s youth

CONTEXT AND CHALLENGES

With its rapid industrialisation, Morocco urgently needs specialised skills

Following sustained growth in the automotive industry over the last decade, Morocco has emerged as one of the leading exporters of cars to Europe. According to the country’s Foreign Exchange Office, 2021 figures showed more than 358,000 vehicles were exported, representing an 18 per cent increase from the previous year.

Morocco’s National Pact for Industrial Ergence 2009–2015, and the Industrial Acceleration Plan 2014–2020, were key to the development of the country’s automotive industry. These initiatives laid the foundation for attracting investment, promoting employment, and developing skills in the sector.

Under the National Pact for Industrial Emergence, Morocco expanded its training programmes between 2011 and 2017 by establishing Automotive Industry Training Institute (IFMIA) centres in Casablanca, Kenitra, and Tangier. The mandate of these centres was to offer specialised training so as to meet the growing demands of the automotive sector.

In their training activities, the IFMIAs involve professionals from the sector. Nonetheless, for continued support to the automotive sector, it is imperative that the theoretical and practical training they provide meets manufacturers’ evolving needs.

PROJECT APPROACH AND PROJECT GOALS

Strengthening the training offered by IFMIA Kenitra

In June 2022, Invest for Jobs began working with IFMIA Kenitra to enhance its training capacities within the framework of its 'Boosting young people’s skills in the automotive sector' project. The centre is located in Kenitra’s industrial zone, 53 kilometres north of the country’s capital, Rabat, where many automotive suppliers and great demand for skilled workers are found.

IFMIA Kenitra’s basic training and continuing education courses are tailored to equip workers with competitive automotive skills. Each year, the programme trains more than 4,500 young people in a range of subjects, varying from engine assembly, quality control, automation, and sheet metal working.

With the support of Invest for Jobs, the institute has created three new training programmes of varying lengths in areas identified as promising for the industry: plastic injection moulding, material handling, automation and drive system technology. The first programme is part of the initial training provided by the Institute for post-baccalaureate students, and spans over two years. The second programme aims to provide qualifying training to apprentices for a duration of two to four weeks, enabling them to be gainfully employed in automotive companies. The third programme runs in partnership with vehicle manufacturing companies and focuses on ongoing employee training.

IFMIA Kenitra has also been equipped with two plastic injection moulding machines, two training benches for automation and drive system technology, and a forklift for the material handling courses. The purpose of these machines is to allow trainees to cement their knowledge by putting the theory into practice.

STATUS AND OUTLOOK

Creating jobs and improving skills

"The implementation of the 'Boosting young people’s skills in the automotive sector' project enhanced the training offerings at the IFMIA Kenitra training centre,” explained Mohamed Jaffal, Chief Operations Officer at IFMIA. “It increased its capacity to accommodate various ecosystems within the automotive sector locally. This includes trades such as plastic injection, automation, and the operation of material handling equipment."

By the end of the project in July 2023, the three new training programmes developed with the support of Invest for Jobs have produced tangible results: The specialised training enabled 167 highly skilled apprentices to secure jobs in automotive companies, where they now apply their expertise in critical production processes. Additionally, 282 students completed initial training, and 559 employees received continuing training that enhanced their specialised skills.

These skilled professionals are now addressing production challenges across Morocco's automotive sector. Their integration has improved manufacturing precision and efficiency, helping automotive companies meet rising European market demands.

The initiative represents a strategic investment in Morocco's automotive manufacturing ecosystem. By developing domestic technical talent rather than relying on foreign expertise, the country is building a sustainable talent pipeline that strengthens its position as a leading automotive exporter and reinforces its capabilities to move up the value chain in this growing sector.

IFMIA was supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
